Episode 11 : Post-Apocalyptic Futuristic Science Fiction Dragons with Spirits and a Cat

A couple of notes before we get into the good stuff: This episode’s title (“Post-Apocalyptic Futuristic Science Fiction Dragons with Spirits and a Cat”) refers to how absolutely genre-bending Rachel Aaron’s Heartstrikers series is. Although on further contemplation, Smack would call it post-apocalyptic futuristic science fantasy dragons with spirits and a cat. Because Heartstrikers is, … Continue reading Episode 11 : Post-Apocalyptic Futuristic Science Fiction Dragons with Spirits and a Cat

A couple of notes before we get into the good stuff: This episode consists ENTIRELY of spoilers for the first three Green Creek books. This is your warning. Smack let Gabi run wild and say whatever the heck she felt like saying. Our next bonus episode (slated for after episode 10) will wrap up Gabi’s … Continue reading Bonus Episode 2 : Everything Exists in Werewolf Fiction

Episode 10: Book Haulidays Part 2 — On a Hunting Trip and Haven’t Been Home in a Few Days

Smack made a joke about parents being on a hunting trip and “haven’t been home in a few days” and the reference sailed on by Gabi. Turns out Gabi had never seen Supernatural. Smack may have quit watching about seven seasons in (back in the dark ages when Supernatural had not devolved into quite such … Continue reading Episode 10: Book Haulidays Part 2 — On a Hunting Trip and Haven’t Been Home in a Few Days

Episode 9: Book Haulidays Part 1 — Eat Your Nemesis

A couple of notes before we get into the good stuff: Gabi got herself tangled up in T.J. Klune’s Wolfsong, which is book one in their Green Creek series. She got herself so entangled, in fact, that the Feelings it inspired became its own bonus episode, which you can find here. You can find her … Continue reading Episode 9: Book Haulidays Part 1 — Eat Your Nemesis

Episode 8: Sirens Part II — That Sure Is Something I Read

A couple of notes before we get into the good stuff: The Clarion Workshop is an intensive six-week summer program focused on science fiction and fantasy short stories. Smack attended in 2012 alongside Carmen Maria Machado, who wrote Her Body and Other Parties and In the Dream House. But! The story Smack refers to in … Continue reading Episode 8: Sirens Part II — That Sure Is Something I Read

Episode 7: Sirens Part I — It’s Not Hoarding if It’s Books

At the end of October 2021, Smack and Gabi attended the Sirens Conference in Denver, Colorado. The con dedicates itself to examining gender in speculative literature, and it’s very much a safe space in every sense of the word: it’s a place to share academic analyses, creative works, and a shared love of fantasy and … Continue reading Episode 7: Sirens Part I — It’s Not Hoarding if It’s Books

Episode 6: Mysterious Galaxy Summer Bingo Showdown Part II

As we mentioned in the show notes for episodes four and five, we made the rookie mistake of recording in front of an open because it was a beautiful day and who closes their windows on a beautiful day? A: people recording podcasts, because that “gentle breeze” causes some weird vibrations. (Sorry, everyone. Our bad.) … Continue reading Episode 6: Mysterious Galaxy Summer Bingo Showdown Part II

Episode 5: Mysterious Galaxy Summer Bingo Showdown, Part One

As with episode four (we recorded them at the same time), we made the rookie mistake of recording in front of an open window because it was a beautiful day and who closes their window on a beautiful day? A: people recording podcasts, as it turns out, because that “gentle breeze” caused some weird vibrations. … Continue reading Episode 5: Mysterious Galaxy Summer Bingo Showdown, Part One

Episode 4: What’s a Gyarados?

This is a long one–we covered a lot of ground in episode four! And as Gabi mentions at the beginning, we did a silly thing and recorded it in front of an open window. That resulted in about four brief moments where there’s a weird, unpleasant reverb sound and we’re both awfully sorry about that. … Continue reading Episode 4: What’s a Gyarados?
